Will I Save Money?

Although this is a simple question, there is not necessarily a simple answer. The short answer is “YES”, you can save lots of money.

Why I say that this is not a simple question, is that for most people who choose vaping over smoking, they do so for one reason only – i.e. the health benefits, and this should be the main reason to switch. Having said that, the table below does give a realistic comparison between the cost of smoking versus the cost of vaping in Ireland. Many other vaping products could have been chosen, but products below were taken for demonstration purposes.

Real / Analog Cigarettes
Currently the cost of a pack of 20 cigarettes in Ireland is €8.95. Thus, your average pack a day smoker will spend over €3200 per in a year.
Electronic Cigarettes / Vaping Equivalent
(based on Ego Starter Kit, Dual Coil Clearomizers & eLiquid consumption)
Ego Riva Starter Kit €49.00
2 x Spare Ego T Batteries (900mah) €36.00
1 x Spare Charger €7.00
10 x Packs of 5 Dul Coil Clearomizers €70.00
20 ml eLiquid per week €416.00
Total €578.0

Total Saving per Year: €2,622.00

I should also state, that very many people who switch to electronic cigarettes, go completely overboard with their new found freedom from cigararettes, and end up trying and buying the latest new electronic cigarette gadget. In this scenario, you can end up spending as much as you did on smoking, but having said that, it’s still much better than spending your hard earned money on the wicked weed!

Revolution in smoking aims to stub out cigarettes – with the help of tobacco firms

New substitutes deliver a hit of nicotine and mimic the sensation but without the lethal effects

Britain is on the brink of a revolution in smoking which aims to eradicate the cigarette.

Companies, including some of the biggest names in tobacco, are poised to launch a generation of devices that mimic the experience of smoking without the lethal effects.

One, being developed by a 29-year-old Oxford graduate, has attracted the attention of BAT, one of the world’s largest tobacco companies, which has bought the rights to market it. A profusion of electronic and other devices has appeared in the past year, thanks to a legal loophole which allows them to be sold freely so long as they do not make any health claim .

An estimated 10 million “e-cigarettes”, which are shaped to look like the real thing and simulate smoking by heating nicotine to produce an inhaled mist, have been sold worldwide. Other devices, similar to asthma inhalers, deliver the nicotine as a vapour or powder drawn directly into the mouth or lungs.

UK regulators are considering ways to bring the new devices within the law but campaigners are insisting on “light touch” controls which could make it legal to market them in newsagents and supermarkets alongside cigarettes. Pure nicotine, though highly addictive, has few side effects and a low risk of overdose – it is the tobacco in which it is contained that is lethal.

But the idea has caused alarm among some experts, who say it is wrong to promote nicotine dependency. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, which licenses medicines, has begun a programme of research following a consultation exercise on the risks to consumers from the products and the impact of regulation. It is due to make a final decision on how to regulate them by spring 2013.

The Royal College of Physicians has called for the devices to be made more widely available. In a 2007 report, the college argued for a “harm reduction” approach which aimed to move smokers on to safer substitutes, to supplement the existing therapeutic approach using nicotine patches and gum to help smokers to give up. The Cabinet Office’s behavioural insight team has backed the new technology. In its report in September, the unit said: “If alternative and safe nicotine products can be developed which are attractive enough to substitute people away from traditional cigarettes, they could have the potential to save 10,000s of lives a year.”

John Britton, professor of epidemiology and director of the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies at the University of Nottingham, said: “There are very few areas where the UK leads the world, but we do on this. We have a government that is considering changes to the way nicotine is sold and marketed which has the potential to save thousands of lives in this country and millions worldwide. No other country is doing this – but a lot are watching.”

Responses to the MHRA consultation mostly supported a form of “light touch” regulation which would ensure the devices were safe but would not deter companies by requiring them to conduct expensive trials as for medicines. But some organisations, including local authority regulators, the Trading Standards Institute and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health warned that e-cigarettes were “bypassing all legislative controls” and posed a safety risk to users and a danger to children.

The Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services called for e-cigarettes and similar devices to be licensed as medicines, like nicotine patches and gum. Experts say this would effectively amount to a ban, as manufacturers would not pay for the necessary clinical trials.

Others warn that making the devices widely available could lead to non-smokers becoming addicted or act as a “gateway” to tobacco for children.

Most e-cigarettes are made in China. A survey for Ash, the anti-smoking charity, found one smoker in 10 had tried them and 3 per cent had continued to use them. A spokesman for Ash said: “E-cigarettes have taken off in the last year. Companies are taking the opportunity to market them while they are unregulated. We think light touch regulation is a sensible way forward. Compared to smoking, they are not nearly as harmful. But there is still too much uncertainty about their safety.”

Dekang Antique Holmes

This liquid is new for 2012 and only arrived on Monday. The liquid does have a “roll your own”  tobacco smell and is based on Old Holborn tobacco brand The liquid is slightly more viscous than others but it still soaks well into a cartridge. I have used it both in 510 cartridge and a Dual Coil Clearomizer and it works equally well if somewhat differently  in both.

When vaped, the liquid does have a roll-up taste. In fact I gave a smoking friend of mine a try as she was smoking an Old Holborn rollie and she was very impressed! Like many Dekang liquids there is a sightly sweet taste.

Nicotine Strength for this review at 24mg is high, which probably helps with  the good throat hit, but the flavour will be available at all levels. Would recommend it to tobacco lovers and especially ex-rollie users.

Lung cancer is biggest cause of cancer death

Lung cancer has overtaken breast cancer as the biggest cause of cancer death in women in Ireland for the first time, according to the Irish Cancer Society.

The society’s Lung Cancer Awareness campaign, “Look After Your Lungs”, was launched today to encourage people to know how best to prevent lung cancer and to recognise its signs and symptoms.

Recent data shows lung cancer is now the biggest cancer killer in Ireland for both men and women with 1,708 people dying in 2010. 1,006 of those were men and 702 were women.

Breast cancer deaths for the same period amounted to 634.

New cases of lung cancer in women have increased by 17.6% in 2010, whereas breast cancer cases are increasing at a much lower rate.

Smoking is the key cause of lung cancer and the number of cases is expected to grow each year as the impact of an increasing numbers of female smokers over the past 20 years is seen.

Speaking to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland programme, Dr Finbarr O’Connell, Consultant Respiratory Physician at St James’s Hospital, said 95% of lung cancer cases result from smoking.

“If you are in your 20s or 30s and you are able to give up, you can reduce your lung cancer risk to the same as a non-smoker,” he said.

Early detection is also deemed to be a key factor in improving survival rates.

Rapid Access Clinics for lung cancer have been set up in all eight designated cancer centres and, according to 2011 data, 2,380 people were seen in them in the first six months of last year.

Of those patients, 89% saw a specialist within two weeks of referral.

Dual Coil Clearomizers

New shipment arrived from out main suppliers, Microcig today. Have a few new products to try out, but today have tried out the new Dual Coil Clearomizers. Am very impressed with both the amount, flavour and heat of vapour produced. Am told that these guys need to be kept very wet, and am still not sure how many times one can be used over, but will post back.

Although these are called Clearomizers, they are in fact cartomizers. In my opinion these are far superior to your standard single coil cartomizer, with a much more pleasant draw, especially with a Derlin Drip Tip fitted.

Edit: January 28

I have being using the Dual Coil Clearomizer for past 2 weeks plus. I have to say that I am very impressed. I am what I would describe as a moderate vapor, and I find that these Dual Coil Clearomizers last me for one week or more, before performance drops to a level where I feel I need to replace. I was also fortunate enough to be away skiing for one of these weeks, and had the DC Clearomizer with me at all times (with Ego battery), including all the falls etc. They are a touch piece of equipment and no breakages or leaks were experienced. I found that by topping them off with approx 10 drops of juice every couple or hours or so, kept the cartomizer and me vaping away happily.

Website & Blog Update

The development of the www.ezsmoke.ie website is well under way, and at this stage we have the site fairly well populated with products. There is still a lot of backend tweaking to be done, but am still hoping to have the site live by the end of January.

Also, today have installed new WordPress blogging software, which we hope in time will become a very useful resourse.
